this is a simple effective design.

Works great but to bad its only a 1 time use

This is a layered cube. the top is a single block of emerald ore, the next layer is all sand. the next several layers are air followed by a few layers of lava.

when the ore is mined the sand gets "updated" and everything falls into the lava with enough room for the sand and player.
